Guided Tour of Mt. Koya

Sunday, July 23, 2023

The members of Wakayama University's English Presentation Class invite members of the international community to join them on Sunday, July 23, 2023, for a guided tour of Mt. Koya.

About Mt. Koya

Founded by Kukai(空海) in the eighth century, the monastic center of Mt. Koya (Koya-san, 高野山) is one of the holiest places in Japan. Its cultural and historical importance received global recognition in 2004 when UNESCO included Mt. Koya on its list of World Heritage Sites.

Centered around Kongobuji-Temple, the headquarters for Shingon Buddhism, Mt. Koya is home to nearly 120 temples.

The area known as Oku-no-in, or the Inner Sanctuary, is the setting for a vast cemetery within a thick forest of massive cedars. The cemetery includes thousands of ancient mausolea, including those of many famous Japanese.

About Our Tour

Students from Wakayama University will provide English language explanations for some of the most important points of interest around Mt. Koya.

The experience is a chance for them to use what they have been learning in a real-world situation, but it is also a chance for all participants to enjoy a day of sightseeing and international exchange.

This will also be an ideal experience for anyone who wants to practice English or Japanese.

Travel in Comfort

Charter Bus

We will travel by chartered bus from Wakayama City to Mt. Koya (about a two-hour ride). Once we arrive, we will make stops at the Daimon, the Danjo-Garan, Kongobuji, and Oku-no-in. There may also be some other surprises.

After a full day of sightseeing, we will return to Wakayama by around 6:00 or 6:30 in the evening.

Located in high in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Mt. Koya is fast becoming one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Japan.

Don't miss this chance to see for yourself why!
